I bought a new lens last week, or maybe two weeks ago. I've not used it every day but I've used it a lot lately. It takes pretty spectacular photos. It's cured me of my Leica M lust. It's inspired me to take more photos recently. It's made me notice how quickly it's getting dark these days. We're in that half of the year where the days are shorter, and getting even shorter quickly. It makes you think about escaping, running away to lighter, warmer, dryer climes with a camera and a change of underwear. Or maybe just throw tarps over what you've got and hope you can make it through until the spring. The rain hasn't settled in yet so at least there's that.

Terrible photograph. But that's Ira Glass. It was a pretty incredible show. I was skeptical when I bought the tickets, wondering if he could capture the magic of This American Life on stage by himself but he did. He really, really did.

Cropped and cropped again. Still didn't turn out the way I wanted. Wrong lens maybe. Not enough light definitely.

Birthday proper. She gets to pick the menu for the day. Banana chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, hot dogs for lunch, hamburgers for dinner. I'm glad she only gets to pick one day a year, my gut is rotten. Tomorrow's diet will consist solely of raw vegetables and coffee.

Birthday bowling, but of the black light variety, which means no photos of the party itself. But the walk home was fun.

It's been a while since I've been in Calgary. I loathed it when I was there but am impressed by the progress it has made since I left. There are dedicated bike routes, architecture by Sir Norman Foster, a Santiago Calatrava bridge, public transit has been invested in heavily, and there's this, public art. It was an intriguing amorphic construction of frosted plexi panels. I'm speculating, but there was a small port that begged you to place your smart phone against it and I suspect it might have taken whatever image you have on your phone and projected it on the inside of these panels somehow. Maybe. I would have liked to visit this again at night to confirm the hypothesis. Regardless, it begged the viewer to walk around and through it, to touch it, to peak through the cracks of it. That's a good thing.

14-9-2

Fourth day in the garage. Yesterday saw the beginning of lights turned on by a light switch instead of a power bar like they had been for five years, and today I added two more fixtures to the circuit so most corners of the garage are reasonably well lit. And then I started to shuffle fixtures around. There isn't an outlet for it yet but the compressor found its home in the back corner. And I put the milling machine where it will stay. The fridge is still full of mold and needs to be washed and the rat's nest (literally) cleared out from around the compressor, and then plugged in, and then a trip to the liquor store for a quantity of beer. Small battles fought and won. Slowly fought and won.

It felt good to start putting frame building machines in place. Everything needs a thorough cleaning, and I'll have to invest in some steel wool to remove some rust from the bigger machines that are usually preserved by hand grease and cutting oil. "A rolling stone gathers no moss" comes to mind. Four long days, and more to come.

14-9-1

Yesterday there was electricity in the garage. Today there's outlets, and a switch that works lights. You can see what the electrical was like before with that outlet on the right of the frame. Every original outlet in the garage was the same way, lacking covers and hanging from bent, rusty nails that were never pounded in the whole way. The garage has been without power since the service to the house was upgraded 5 years ago. I mean, there's been the same orange faded to yellow extension cord running through the back yard for those five years that powered a handful of compact fluorescent bulbs in fixtures hanging from drywall screws in the rafters, but at least that miserable excuse for a circuit was grounded and running through a GFI outlet at the house.

The electrical in the entire house was pretty scary when we took it over. Nothing was grounded and many circuits were connected in coverless junction boxes in the drop ceiling of the basement. There's been so many challenges in getting this house to a livable state, never mind the garage.

Long days. But it's nice that there's rewards.
