Last day of summer. Or similar enough, September starts tomorrow. I made my kid breakfast, close enough to lunch that it was lunch as well, and then started digging a trench in my back yard for the largest chunk of teck cable I've ever had to carry. It was, best guess, 80 pounds. It was long enough to reach from my house to my garage with a couple of twists and turns to go underground and around fences and such. I had good help from better friends who worked for beer and pizza, a bit of sweat, I bled for a bit when I jabbed my knuckles with a knife, another scar I suppose, my knuckles wear them proudly. There was a moment when I felt like hitting something because the wire I "found" was 12 gauge and not 14 gauge like I thought it was and it wouldn't fit into the quick connect ports on the back of the switch or outlet. There's now a main panel and a sub panel, room to plug in a 240V compressor that has 5 year old air in it from Calgary.
The first circuit was to an outlet that will run my milling machine and a light so I can see if my milling machine is doing what I've asked it to do. This photo is of that switch. It's not a glamorous photo, but it took 5 years to take.
I'm exhausted. I'm going to bed. But I'm happy that I can walk out to my garage and turn a light on. Small things.

In the winter there are lots of photos of dark spaces lit with lamps or rainy streets. When the days are only 5 hours long (artistic license, yes) it's sometimes hard to find moments lit by the sun to capture photographs of. Today wasn't that short but it was full. I'm going to fill my garage with electricity, plugs that work, a 240V circuit to run my compressor, lights that work on a switch instead of a power bar, all powered by a 60 amp sub panel instead of a faded orange extension cord strewn across the back yard. Civilized. I spent a good part of the day shuffling the flotsam and jetsam of life around in a small garage to make space for wires and outlet boxes. I helped fix a bike shifter too, and I might have found my next couch this morning. I guess what I'm saying is today filled up rather quickly, as most days do, with chores. I find myself contemplating the deck chairs of my life, and where I might put them. It seems an impossible task, but I dream of seats placed just so, or at the very least, a functioning light switch. Tomorrow I run the big wire. One more chair placed just so.
I like where this light is, the one in the photograph. It's been there for a while. It should be there for a while yet.

Where has summer gone? I mentioned that the sunset photos may be a bit of a cop out but with the days getting shorter and August nearly done I'm savouring each and every sunset.

The capitols on the Pigeon Park building, the old Merchants Bank.
This is where one used to be.
And this is where it ended up some time during the night. No one was hurt. And the pigeons don't seem to mind.

I haven't missed a day since January 1, 2013. I missed today. I saw the time on the clock and had time to take a photograph but it's felt a bit like an obligation lately, to keep the record perfect, to not skip a day. I've never wanted this project to be an obligation but rather something interesting that fills a creative need or desire to produce "something." And it was never really meant to be "creative." Some photos are pretty good by my standards, some just alright, some quite bad.
And today there isn't a photo.
And that's alright.

Sometimes the sunset shots at the end of the day are about me copping out, grabbing a last minute photograph before the light disappears, and an easy one at that. I have other pictures from today taken earlier on but this is what the sky did at the end of the day and it was incredible.

David P. Smith played at Merge tonight with Stephen Lyons on drums. The picture isn't so great but the show was amazing. So much talent between those two.
