24-5-11

This fridge lived in my bike shop for a bunch of years. It's spent a bunch of years more in my garage waiting for its next role in life. Nostalgia is a powerful drug. It's time to let go of this relic of a bygone era. A good photograph is all I need. I don't need the "thing" anymore. So I rolled it out into the alley with a "FREE - Works" sign taped to it. Will someone take it? No idea. If it's still there in 2 days it will get recycled.

Steve Albini died today. Heart attack. 61 years old. The world is a shittier place without Steve Albini in it. Steve is in the black t-shirt

His opinion on being in bands, and producing albums, is legendary. He produced a generation of records that changed music.

He will be missed. He is irreplaceable.

24-4-25

Drove downtown in the rain just to check out the late night donut shops....

There are no late night record shops in Vancouver.

I had to be crazier than Brian. There is only room enough for one crazy person in Brian's head, and that's got to be me. I have to be the ultimate power in this situation. ... I said he had to get out of bed and start living a normal life, and he said, "Make me." How do you make a guy get out of bed after so long? Explain it to him first? No. You throw water on him first. That's just what I did. I warned him, and then threw water on him and he got up - Dr. Landy on working with Brian Wilson.

This one is for my kid to figure out. It works, probably. At least that's what the tape on the suitcase it was in said.

I got this old Underwood working.

Game 1. Boston with an early lead. They won, 5-1. Leafs are up to their usual playoff strategy of looking terrible and probably going out in the first round. Fool me once, shame on them. Fool me 8 seasons in a row, maybe it's time to move on.

24-4-19

I almost made it through the entire season without a single cherry blossom picture. But the season is running long this year. Old habits...

I've been here before. Different focal length, different lens. And the house has continued to rot. Yet, it's still there. The lot is worth over a million dollars. The lot next door is vacant. There's a housing crisis in Vancouver. This doesn't help.

It was solar eclipse day. I saw one once. I thought about going to this one. It would have meant a drive to Newfoundland. The fringes were viewable from many places, but totality is what you want. Instead I stayed in Vancouver. And it rained. All day. Like it was December, it rained. Apparently it was clear in Newfoundland, but it would have been so bad if I drove that far and faced the same skies we got in Vancouver.

So I'll make a joke about taking a photo of the partial eclipse, which you couldn't see, because of the clouds and rain. Which is a way of saying, "I didn't take a photograph today."

The next solar eclipse will be in 2026 and viewable in Iceland, Greenland, Spain, and parts of Portugal. That's a long way to drive...

The one after that crosses northern Africa.

No picture today. But the world was full of pictures today. So there's that.

24-3-30

New bike. City bike. The mural confirmed my correct choice of pink touch up paint for the newly brazed on stops. Love this bike. Didn't like that I had to braze on stops to make it work. Also had to completely disassemble it to grease the interfaces, chase the BB, and swap out the seatpost that came with it for one where the bolts didn't touch the bottom of the seat when you weren't sitting on it. New seat too.

The bike industry is in trouble. Multiple sources agree. All-City is now a defunct brand in a sea of newly defunct brands. I liked it enough to buy one before they disappeared for good. Maybe it's my last bike.

New bike. New bikes need to be fixed. Derailleur housing should never be run full length from the shifter to the derailleur so I added a stop. Made a huge difference to how crisply the shifting was.
