The figs just didn't get ripe this year. Last year the tree in the yard produced two crops of them but this year the first crop never softened up. It was a little disappointing but on the up side we have enough eyes for a couple hundred snowmen.

Snow in Vancouver. This picture doesn't do it justice but the view from the top floor of the Lee Building is quite spectacular and the rare blanketing of the city with snow was quite beautiful.

10-11-18

I'd been to the CBC store looking for a toque three times but they've always been out of stock. Yesterday they had them and I bought one and today it snowed in Vancouver. The timing was good.

"I bought a painting today. At Value Village."
"What is it?"
"It's a velvet painting."
"Wait, let me guess what it's of. Is it of Elvis?"
"No."
"A toreadore?"
"No."
"Dogs playing poker?"
"No."
"A Spanish woman playing castanets?"
"No."
"A bowl of fruit?"
"No."
"I give up."
"A peacock."
"I love it, can I see it?"
"Yes."
"Awesome!"

10-11-16

It felt like I took a hundred photographs today. In the end I had taken maybe half a dozen. This is the first one I took.

10-11-14

Late night sideways moments. They are little stolen moments, not quite running away but finding a comfortable moment in an uncomfortable day. And this car was there along the way. I like the idea of old cars but don't like old cars. They are slow, heavy, don't handle well, but they embody such poetry about escape and freedom. On this night it was a symbol of an emotion I was feeling.

10-11-13

I love the blinds.

10-11-12

Cropped. I should have skipped today but I've skipped too many days lately.

10-11-11

There used to be a subtitle to this series of photographs that read "it's in the details." Maybe it should have read, "it's the little things" since that could be held to have meaning in so many different ways.

10-11-9

Am I overcompensating for missing yet another day? Truth be told I was sick yesterday. I did carry a camera with me to the walk-in clinic but I didn't take any photographs. Not sure why. But today, I took three photographs all day and I wanted to use all three of them. There's certainly a theme running through them and perhaps that's why I thought it appropriate to group them together.

There are sometimes days when I'll take a hundred pictures and I can't pick one I like so it makes me happy to have a day like today where I took exactly three photographs and I couldn't decide between the three of them.

10-11-7

I rarely pose pictures. I can usually find the metaphors "in the wild" as it were. And I suppose in some ways this isn't posed either, or rather the metaphor I was looking for was inherent to the subject of this photograph. Those boots were in pretty reasonable condition when I started working on this house I live in. They've gotten pretty beaten up during the course of things and they spend more time on my feet than they should. It's been a long day and this evening it just made sense for me to take off my boots and socks and stand there barefoot. It might have been more poetic to stand in grass, or a water's edge, but in that moment I really just needed to feel the floor of my apartment. It still doesn't feel like home, but at least it feels like something.

Perhaps when all the renos are done I'll take this pair of boots and bury them in the back yard. They've worked long enough it's probably fair to suggest they should be put out of their misery. And with my boots three feet or so under ground I might just have to take a vacation.

10-10-30

We got a morning in at the park before the death illness set in. Sunny and warm late in October. It's nice here in Vancouver sometimes, if you can afford it. I left here to go to work on a Saturday. Such a shame.

10-10-29

Another one gone.

10-10-28

A wonderful night full of sideways surprises.

10-10-26

I'm usually pretty aware of the days I miss taking photographs. I completely missed yesterday and had no idea. But today, sitting with friends in a bike shop after hours, golden.

10-10-24

Xanadu.

10-10-23

Jesus Christ Billi you were beautiful this day. I'm glad I made the trip.

10-10-22

Planes, trains and automobiles. Except maybe for the trains. Maybe next time.

I've missed a few days. I've been incredibly busy working trying to get a handle on my debt. It doesn't seem to be working but I can't imagine how bad it would be if I wasn't working as much as I am. The fatigue is setting in, it's been months at this pace, and I'm actually deathly ill as I make an attempt to catch up on these photos. It's the first day in ages where I haven't worked or been travelling across vast parts of this country in a vehicle to get me to a place where I can work. I've missed more days than usual, and the pictures I have posted are some of the least satisfying ones I've taken lately. But there are a couple of good ones in there that make it still, in some way, worthwhile, though I toy with the idea of putting this thing to bed again, either temporarily again, or perhaps permanently this time. We'll see.

10-10-15

A trip to Dawson Creek. 32 hours there and back. I might have thought there would be more sights to see along the way but the relatively young towns of northern BC are rather bleak. If I had more time I might have taken more photographs.

10-10-11

We picked up pumpkins, ate little donuts, had lunch out, carved pumpkins. Wonderful day.

10-10-10

Oh, the date. One might have thought about taking a photograph at 10:10:10am on October 10th, 2010, like it might have been significant in some way. I like the way the date rolls off my tongue but I'm too seated in a practical reality to romanticize it in any way. This photograph was taken randomly. As it this date in history simply a random moment in time.

Pictures of dreams. Dreams of pictures.
