Ephemeral arrays of light dancing on the asphalt.

I don't know what it is about this ugly, old condo on the hill that I find fascinating. But it is.

As I put this together it's tied 42, 42, 3. Liberals, NDP, Green. I don't know. None of the parties seem to have a lot of meaning to me. But I voted. As they say, you have no right to complain if you don't vote. I like to complain.

Timber Timbre played at the Vogue. Stellar. Quickly becoming one of my favourite bands.

Seriously.

17-5-2

The things we hold on to. The things we protect with tarps. Not literally, but figuratively. And sometimes literally. I remember talking to a Dutch woman who ran a storage lot to the northeast of Calgary. I asked her about all the "stuff" there, the broken down motorhomes, the rusty old cars. She said, "We store peoples' dreams."

For a while anyway.

We hold on to things for strange reasons. Sometimes good reasons. Sometimes not. Sometimes the tarps come out too late, sometimes the tarps just erode. And you just stand there and watch.

"When you're losing your wings, feather by feather, love the way they whip away upon the wind." - Bill Callahan.

I'm tempted to cover this car with a new, larger, better tarp. It's not my car and I don't know who's it is, but the longer one holds onto his feathers, the longer he can fly, or at least have the potential to fly. You forget that sometimes. I do anyway.

This picture, it has me moving my head up and down, to see better through the blinds. I swear I can see the background moving in perspective. Mind games.

Timber Timbre

"A guilt-gifted chance, the privilege of you
Desire deserving of something more true
A quick bald and old I aged into
And what will I do, overdo, and undo?"

- Moment, Timber Timbre

Does it count as detox if you still drink coffee? A lot of coffee? There's salad in the fridge, so there's that.

And I bought the new Timber Timbre record today. It's a gooder.

This motorcycle is pretty amazing. I'm looking forward to putting many more miles on it.

17-4-17

New motorcycle. What else was I going to do? Rode up to Jones Lake. It's quite beautiful up there. This motorcycle is probably the best motorcycle I've ever owned. It was supposed to rain today but it didn't. I'd like to think I dared it to rain, and the rain backed down, because I read the forecast and put on rain pants and an extra layer and rode anyway. If I was spiritual... But if I wasn't I wouldn't be taking photographs.

No easy answers. For the most part, there aren't a whole lot of good questions to begin with.

“All I ever really want to know is how other people are making it through life—where do they put their body, hour by hour, and how do they cope inside of it.”

- Miranda July

Under grey skies, in the rain, with the forest rising around it. The built environment of Vancouver as a metaphor for Vancouver. In a spring that's had half the average sun for March, and a record low seventy hours or so, and constant rain for the first week of April as well. Under the weather.

It's been a tough one.

17-4-7

Old car. It was in colour, this photograph, but it seemed fake, but in black and white it feels older. Not just because it's black and white, there are plenty of black and white photographs, and some pretty expensive modern options for taking black and white photographs as well.

I lust after a Leica, a black and white specific one has a strange appeal. Or one can simply convert the colour photographs, right? But where's the excitement in that?

I have a road trip coming up, probably, and I wonder about taking an old film camera or two and shooting black and white film exclusively. Or colour film? I don't know.

There's a lot of things I don't know.

17-4-6

Year in, year out, the holes are dug, the dirt is put aside, stuff is built in the holes, and it's odd that when the dirt is in the ground it doesn't need to be covered but when it's on the ground it does need to be covered. Absurd.

Gregory Crewdson

"I don't deliberately look for something dark or bleak or disconnected, in fact that's not something I'm even conscious of in the work as I'm making it. I'm always trying to create beauty, reveal hope, show the sense of longing that exists in isolation and loneliness, and capture the search for something greater inside all of my subjects."

17-4-5

Dream car. Gilding something helps.

17-4-4

Every so often there's a bonus photograph, but this feels more like two parts of the same photograph. Changing perspectives, lights along a path, chaos in the light.

They are lovely light fixtures.

I've been enamored with the Queen Elizabeth Theater for years, this was the first time I'd stepped inside of it. It's a fantastic space.

Raymond Carver

"It's possible, in a poem or short story, to write about commonplace things and objects using commonplace but precise language, and to endow those things—a chair, a window curtain, a fork, a stone, a woman's earring—with immense, even startling power."

- Raymond Carver

It describes, also, how I often approach photographs.

17-3-31

Gazing down upon their kingdom, the King and Queen reflected upon all they had assembled, all they had wrought, and questioned it. The Queen leaned in to her King and whispered in his ear, "I'm not satisfied." He nodded in agreement.

But it was their kingdom. It was all they had, and they had it all.

17-3-30

No filter. No adjustments. And most importantly, blue sky. It's been a while.
