Phil is an older gentleman who shows up at the Anza Club which is usually the packed with hipsters. Over the noise and in defiance of the context he sits down at the piano from time to time and plays beautiful classical pieces. He's a gem.

With only a few days until Remembrance Day I thought it interesting that Poppy Red was making its identity obvious to anyone who cared to look.

A year ago today I got bored and started taking a photograph a day again after taking some time off. I remember the first time I attempted this it seemed a daunting task and nearly impossible to acheive but this second time it seemed obvious, easy, that I would get through another year without question. I missed a couple of days but promised myself I would if I were going to enjoy this project again. I'm less amazed at another 365 days photographed (less three or four) have found their way into my collection and more bewildered by the fact that another year has passed by. There's a line from a Cowboy Junkies song, "And the hours, well, I don't mind how they creep on by like an old love of mine, it's the years that simply disappear that are doing me in." I guess I have a collection of photographs to show for the year but it sometimes feels like very little progress has been made in other areas which, I suppose, is where the rest of the lyrics of that song fit in. I thought long and hard about simply not posting anything here anymore (and you may have noticed the gap in time that has passed between updates) but I like the photos, I like looking back and finding a visual record of where I was on any given day. And I haven't run out of things to take photographs of yet. And, of course, Jamie Livingston kept it up for almost 18 years (and, wow, is it ever amazing, and sad, and beautiful) so I should be able to do it just a little while longer.

It's not until you know how much is too much that you'll know how much is enough.

Disclaimer: I rarely construct images. Almost everything I photograph is something I happen upon. This one is a complete fabrication.

The days keep getting shorter and there are more and more photos being taken at night as a result. I may have to invest in a new small tripod today, one that fits in my bag, my current one being held together with electrical tape isn't quite cutting it.

Like a dream. It's odd how you show up when I least expect it, riding your bike in a city you shouldn't be in on your birthday...and then I wake up.

It gives me hope to see such a modification done to a camper. It's quite a beautiful thing really.

Kill your television...

I've invested in cable television for the first time in three years. I've tried to watch a few shows but other than a couple that are easily downloaded off the internet I've really struggled to find anything I would like to watch on television. Giving it up was one of the hardest things to do, there were half a dozen or more shows that I was addicted to like The Sopranos, anything CSI, Seinfeld reruns (no matter how many times I'd seen the particular episode in questions) all mind numbing trash. I got cable to watch hockey, they demand you subscribe to some level of cable service in order to be able to add hockey to your home. I was worried I'd fall into the usual traps but so far I haven't. I've even allowed myself to "surf" for a while looking for something, anything, that would justify the $50/month charge for their service, but nothing. Not that I had time to watch television anyway.

Not sure where I stole this from. Exploding dog a bit? Half a dozen other things too perhaps? Don't know.

Another day mountain biking. It looks like I'm in the middle of nowhere but it's really out at Burnaby Mountain which is for all intents and purposes in the heart of the sprawl of Vancouver surrounded by highways and housing on all sides. No GPS needed here, if one were to get lost all you would have to do is essentially go "down" and eventually you'd find yourself rescued from the wilderness (and probably a Tim Hortons too.)
