16-11-10

Leonard Cohen died yesterday though the news didn't report it until today. It got me listening to music. Dead people. David Bowie. Jason Molina. And Leonard Cohen.

Some time after I returned to the world of vinyl I bought a pair of needles (what's the plural of "stylus"?), to replace an undoubtedly older worn one, and to have a spare in case I wore the second one out. That was 2013. Apparently a stylus is good for about 500 hours of music. I've easily tripled that, maybe quadrupled that. Maybe 5-tupled it (pentupled?) It hit me as I had a quiet moment with a record and a volume knob and I swapped out the stylus for the new one. And the sound got so much better.

So. Much. Better.

I ordered two more styluses (styli?) tonight. Some millions of dollars later conveniently put on a credit card and they will ship to me by the end of next week, or the following week for sure. Probably.

Good night Mr. Cohen. The vinyl release of your newest record was held up and not quite available yet, but when it is I'll be ready.

I took four pictures of this. This is the first one. Trust your gut.

28,005 words so far. 264 pages. A stack of notes adding up time in billable quarter hours. 63 more pages of product information and pricing to add into the index. One more day of this. Another few thousand words. Another bunch of pages.

I am not cut out for a desk job.

And then one day all the leaves were gone. I don't remember there being a summer.

Blind Pilot played at the Biltmore. I took a photo with my phone. iPhone cameras aren't that good. The first time I saw Blind Pilot they opened for The Decemberists. The Decemberists aren't that good.

I remember taking photos of The Decemberists and deciding after half the set that I'd seen enough and I left with a quick stop at the merch table where I bought a Blind Pilot CD. I said to the guy at the table selling CDs, I said, "these guys are terrible" in reference to The Decemberists. "But that first band was great. Do you have their CD?" and the guy sold me one. I got home and looked at my photos of the show and only realized then that the person who sold me the CD was the keyboard player.

Lovely light late this afternoon. A pleasant surprise.

16-10-19

A bunch of years ago Radiohead decided to release a record without a company supporting them. For £40 they would mail you a copy anywhere in the world, or you could download the entire record for whatever you wanted to pay, even a single penny and the record was yours. I paid the £40 and some months later the record showed up in a brown cardboard wrapper on my porch. Fastforward to spring 2016 and I get an email saying, "hey, we're Radiohead, and we're selling another record, maybe you want to buy it." I did. And today it showed up, wrapped in a bit of the mastertape used in the recording of the record, and overall, a stunning package. Radiohead knocks it out of the park again. I bought it long enough ago that I forgot it was coming. What a lovely surprise.

The first of 3 days of colour vs. B+W images. Fall brings long, low light and brilliant colours, and a foreshadowing of the grey of winter.

Ferry ride home. Might be the last one for a while. I like Victoria a lot. More than I thought I would. But I think I'm done with it for a while. Though we're taking on another project there so who knows.
