The rain comes in waves and leaves in its wake glorious sunlit clouds retreating on the horizon.

Cell phone camera pictures. With some help from Photoshop. Yes, cell phone cameras are getting better, but there are still shortcomings. Mostly when the lighting isn't ideal. In my experience all the cheaper cameras struggle with sky blues. This sky looks like it was painted with a fat brush by a drunk person.

The future of professional cameras is safe.

This is turning into a food blog. It's a terrible photograph, but it's the first grilled cheese sandwich I've had in months.

The fried chicken is strong in this city. It's certainly fashionable, and some of it is pretty good. Fighting Chicken is pretty good. It comes in one flavour and it might benefit from offering a spicy or hot. They debone the thighs before frying and give you way too many fresh French fries. Would I go again? If I lived close to it I imagine it would be something I ate once in a while. There are better places if I'm going to have to make an effort to get to a place. I don't know if that answers the question.

She got a skateboard for her birthday yesterday. Today she swiped my tools from the garage and put it together. We're going shopping for skate shoes this weekend.

As promised; an Underwood typewriter over 100 years old. I got it working. And it's lovely.

21-9-18

I took a dozen photographs trying to capture this light. Digital cameras are good about capturing facts, not feelings. The light was magical. Enough time spent in Photoshop had the light of the photograph matching the light I remember seeing. But maybe it's not quite there. Photographs are lies.

Typewriter. I pretend to write sometimes and the stories have been getting a first draft on a typewriter. It slows me down relative to a computer, but is faster than a pen on paper. I could write more about it, but it's all been said before. I remember reading about some current famous author who still, to this day, runs a first draft through a typewriter. Ray Bradbury wrote the first draft of Fahrenheit 451 on a rented typewriter. And it's rumored that Stephen King to this day on occasion still writes with a typewriter though he's also credited with writing one of the earliest books ever completed on a word processor. He also wrote longhand when he was seriously injured in a car accident and couldn't use a keyboard. I think what this really means is, Stephen King is an insatiable writer.

This bit of text was written on a Smith Corona I got off Craigslist for $40 a few years ago. It's a bit light and tends to scooch around on the table when I type. The feet aren't sticky enough and the typewriter isn't heavy enough to stay put. Each jump of the carriage causes the typewriter to wander a bit, but if you use the carriage return bar "just so" you can reseat the machine where it should be at the end of each typed line.

It's kind of a shit typewriter. I have an Underwood typewriter that was given to me that's over 100 years old. It's a bit sticky and needs some attention but I've been inspired by writing with the Smith Corona today. Maybe I'll haul the old Underwood out to the garage and douse it with penetrating oil.

Slightly more appetizing. It will take another day to know for sure.

Bread. Step 1. A whole mess of rotten wet flour crap in a jar on the counter for a couple of days. "Smart" people would dump this in a biohazard bin.

Slow roasted pickled brisket, beef short ribs, baked beans from scratch, classic macaroni salad, cast skillet corn, butter biscuit, kale salad. It was pretty stellar.

Last day of August. Last day of summer? Fall doesn't officially start for another 3 weeks, but somehow September  signals a change in season. For a while there it was just another month but with kids it signals that annual change when school starts and there's a whole new set of demands on your day. The kid is in grade 10 this year. We ate barbequed pork chops for dinner tonight. Time....
